Pediatric forensic provider/nurse sane-p trained


The medical professional is responsible for providing direct medical care to infants, children, adolescents, and vulnerable adults as referred for suspected sexual abuse, physical abuse, neglect and drug endangerment. Provides professional clinical medical care, coordinating the delivery of appropriate and timely care for patients, promoting quality health care outcomes. Provides healthcare education to patients and/or family members.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Works a flexible schedule as required by the needs of the position.

  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members to support patient’s individualized medical care to maximize patient healthcare outcomes, actively preparing and participating in pre visit planning.

  • Develop and maintain good working relationships with team members and investigators to ensure sensitive response to children and families in crisis. 

  • Review preliminary information, obtain history from the patient and/or caregiver, perform a medical-forensic exam. 

  • Communicate with child protective services caseworkers, law enforcement officers and prosecutors regarding physical exam findings.

  • Participate in the process of a child maltreatment assessment as a member of the MDT, as an advisor and observer for child interviews, perform complete medical exam and health assessment, collect forensic evidence including colposcopy and photographic documentation.  Provide follow up, referral and case management as needed to patients. 

  • Provide testimony in court regarding patient care and medical exam findings. 

  • Provide lab testing for patients based on the medical history provided by the patient. 

  • Participate in monthly CAC Multidisciplinary Team case review and regular meetings and other activities.

  • Participate in training as required for accreditation by the National Children’s Alliance and scheduled by the CAC Coordinator.

  • Participate in monthly on ongoing medical peer review via TELECAM.

  • Maintain timely documentation of medical exams to be provided to Law Enforcement and or the Office of Children’s Services.

  • Communicate with staff, patients, and other members of the CAC team in a way that is supportive, constructive, and positive.

  • Maintain awareness of comfort and safety needs of patient, and explain procedures and treatments to patient in a supportive and reassuring manner.  

  • Perform assessment, documentation, education and administration of appropriate medications and/or therapies. Document assessment findings including review of body systems, laboratory results, and diagnostic findings.

  • Assess emergency situations, initiate action to reduce, correct, or prevent immediate, ongoing, or potential risks to the patient.

  • Independently seek resources for assistance and guidance when beyond the scope of skill, knowledge or experience.

  • Maintain a clean and safe working environment including adequate supplies and upkeep of unit and equipment, reporting any defective or missing equipment and safety hazards. 

  • Maintain annual skills-based competencies including safety and infection control requirements.

  • Impart educational knowledge to enhance decision-making and promote understanding by interacting with patients, family, staff, and community.

  • Stay up to date on all required quality measures and actively participate in quality improvement activities to ensure measures are being captured and met. 

  • Perform duties as assigned in a responsible, respectful and caring manner to promote effective staff relationships.

  • Experience and/or desire to work in a non-profit environment and with families and children

 

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • SANE-Pediatric Certification

  • Academic training and practical experience in developmental stages of children and the dynamics and effects of intra and outer familial child abuse and neglect

  • Providing testimony in civil and criminal proceedings

  • Working knowledge of Parent-child interaction, child development materials and the dynamics of child sexual abuse and neglect

  • Previous work experience at a Child Advocacy Center or member of a CAC Multidisciplinary Team

  • Experience working in the field of sexual abuse/sexual assault and child abuse preferred. 

 

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND TRAINING:

Healthcare provider with specific training in child sexual abuse who meet at least ONE of the following training standards:

  1. Child Abuse Pediatrics Subboard eligibility or certification

  2. Physicians without board certification or eligibility in the field of child abuse pediatrics, advanced practice nurses, and physician assistants with a minimum of 16 hours of formal didactic training in the medical evaluation of child sexual abuse

  3. Sexual assault nurse examiners (SANEs) with a minimum of 40 hours of coursework specific to the medical evaluation of child sexual abuse followed by a competency- based clinical preceptorship with an experienced provider in a clinical setting, where the SANE can demonstrate competency in performing exams

 

REQUIRED FOR EMPLOYMENT:

  • Successfully complete a fingerprint, background and criminal history check

  • Complete a 40 hour online Domestic Violence training provided through CDVSA

  • Adhere to all WISH policies, procedures and protocols including confidentiality and code of ethics

  • Acquire SANE-P within a year of hire

  • Cooperates and interacts with WISH staff, volunteers and community agencies with dignity and tact.

  • Will not engage in intimate relationships with a person seeking or receiving services from WISH.

  • Models nonviolent behavior and freedom from substance abuse.

Must adhere to all confidentiality requirements including, but not limited to WISH’s internal policies, requirements of local, state and federal law necessary to protect the safety, dignity and privacy of persons seeking or receiving services.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Fast paced office environment with moderate to loud noise and frequent, unscheduled interruptions.

  • Periodic exposure to situations where individuals may be a danger to themselves or others.

  • Occasional exposure to hazardous conditions (cigarette smoke, bodily fluids, spills, chemicals, cleaning agents, broken glass, etc.)
